Hot Springs and Ryokan

Guess what, y'all. It's time for a field trip. We're heading to a Hot Springs and an Inn for the weekend, and everyone is invited. This place is huge, and has multiple springs both indoor and out. There's separate bathing, mixed, and even a spot for foreigners and prudes who like to keep their swimsuits on. Table tennis? Got it. Room service? You bet. Massages? Possibly. Ghosts? Maybe.

1. Hot springs: after you rinse off come take a relaxing bath. There are multiple options as to what kind of bathing environment you can have, so please choose wisely. Also, please read the signs. None of the springs will kill you, but if you choose the wrong one you might end up with some... adverse effects. Cursed springs might just be a Thing.

2. The Inn: you'll be here for a few nights so find your rooming buddy and get friendly. Whether bonding over food, games, or even just exploring the place there's certainly something you can find to occupy yourself. Just don't be too curious after curfew. The staff are pretty insistent, but they aren't cops so responsibility for your actions are your own.

But yeah this sure is what happens when roomies get randomized, apparently. No spicy nights with Kaname here--but maybe the night's going to end up spicy anyway?! ~~NOT LIKE THAT THOUGH~~ 9S sits up slowly as Masamune speaks, interest clearly piqued.]

"Ain't too bad", more like awesome. [He legitimately can't actually imagine how things could get much nicer than they are here?? Seems like this guy's standards are a little higher all around, though, which is enough to earn this remark with some humor. (Huh, weird, 9S definitely doesn't think he's ever met this person at all, but he's kind of oddly familiar anyway for some reason? Better not let memeverse memories bleed in too much though--)] But yeah, I don't quite understand why there'd be a rule like that about night hours around here...not like there's anything dangerous that'd only come out in downtime or something. Uh, right...?

[Or is there???? Hmmmm. Well, either way, he's shifting his legs back over the side of the bed so he can swing his heels properly now, about an inch or so off the floor as they are in this position. With a bit of a laugh--] Hah, what's your idea of a money's worth?

[I'M ALREADY SO PREEMPTIVELY SORRY TO WHOEVER PAID FOR THIS TRIP HONESTLY.....]

[Masamune drops his ass heavily down on the edge of his own bed, eying his roommate with some degree of both curiosity and amusement. The guy's obviously a foreigner so it makes sense if this is his first hot springs getaway, but his enthusiasm is off the charts. It's kind of contagious.]

Huhm? I was thinking more that it was some kind of scam to make you wanna pay to stay longer, but... maybe there is something dangerous. Maybe they let the yakuza in for shady meetings in the middle of the night. [Yeah he'd know all about that. He grins and leans forward.] Maybe there's an ancient curse.

[That one, he doesn't really believe, but he does want to see what kind of reaction he'll get. Apparently more interesting to him than explaining what he meant by getting his money's worth, but let's be real, it was just about eating the fanciest food on the menu. Which he's still going to do, by the way.]

[Yeah, foreigner's...one way to put it.....but either way, there definitely aren't any hot springs getaways at all where he comes from! The excitement would be terribly difficult to try tamping down for sure, if 9S even wanted to try. But this entire place seems to be designed with enjoyment in mind, and so he hasn't found any reason to hide it just yet--this in itself is as new and refreshing as the actual amenities have been so far, honestly.

--Really though, you only answered like half his questions Masamune?? Finding out what a "money's worth" truly is around these parts is just going to have to wait another day, it seems. 9S is definitely pretty easily distracted from trying to pursue that answer by this new tidbit, after all--he's visibly perking up with great interest about now, his curiosity very obvious.]

An ancient curse? That's--actually a thing that can happen? [He knows what that means conceptually, kind of, but there's a slight pause in which 9S is evidently turning this over a couple more times in his processor anyway. Genuinely, with a tilt of his head:] Is, uh, is that what the "yakuza" would be having shady meetings about, or something...?

[don't...don't look at him he doesnt know what the fuck a yakuza even is.......but also hey, maybe yakuza ghostbusters could be valid????]

[Ha ha, oh wow. Masamune has two options here: be a kind and helpful person and explain to 9S not only that he was joking, but also what the yakuza do (at least as far as the Date Clan goes),

he could fuck with him a little more and see just how far he can push it.

Go on, guess which one it's going to be.]

You know, come to think of it... I heard from my old man before he died, that he heard from his dad, that there was this fancy old resort right around this area that got rented out for some really high-ranking yakuza members to take a nice vacation... [He folds his hands behind his head and purses his lips while he tries to ~~pull something out his ass~~ uh, remember the details.]

Then, uh... Oh. One day a rival family found out and came to kill them all right in the springs where they had nothing to defend themselves with. A literal bloodbath. Maybe this was the place... Maybe their angry spirits did curse it.

[MASAMUNE THIS IS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD because 9S is...absolutely eating this up.......

He's kind of making a close equivalent to the surprised pikachu face about now, anyway; Masamune settles back, but 9S is leaning forward at his perch in turn, elbows planting on his knees and features alight with--fascination??]

You know--it might just be, right?! If we're in the same area, and it's some kind of resort... [Of course, the baths are no longer particularly bloody ~~if not actually kind of mildly cursed for sure oops~~, but it was...probably a little while ago. How old would a human dad's dad be, anyway? Hmm--he could crunch the numbers if he tried, but in the end that's kind of beside the point too. 9S feels like he's got more of a gist of the definition behind "yakuza" now, even from a story like this--some kind of group organization, then...with rival groups, apparently? But even more importantly--]

You think they're still around, then? The spirits! Can we go see them?

[He's got a rough concept of what "spirits" are, anyway, the same way the rough concept of a "curse" also hangs around. The prospect of spirits being an Actual Thing in This Actual Location, though......

Well. 9S certainly seems more excited than actually alarmed--very sincerely so, too. MASAMUNE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE....]

[He may have underestimated this guy... Then again, it's not surprising that 9S' enthusiasm for the trip itself would extend to any hauntings. Masamune can respect that sense of adventure... except in this case, because he's the one who'd probably scream at the sight of a ghost.

He just made it up, so it's fine anyway! Obviously this spring isn't haunted!

I was going to bust outta here after curfew anyway, so I guess if you're that interested... [Actually, this is perfect. He has a partner in crime! This'll make stuff like hopping fences way easier.]

But are you sure you're gonna see them? [Finally, FINALLY gesturing to the blindfold.]

Evidently this question is news to 9S, if the quizzical tilt of his head at it is anything to go by.]

Creep me out? ...Not really? I mean--spirits come from dead humans, right? From what I understand they're not even exactly physical...so, it doesn't sound like they could do very much. [Like, a blob of misplaced residual energy just kind of floating around, or something....why would anyone scream at this?? 9S waves a hand idly.] --Besides, I still have no idea how this stuff works anyway! But it sounds really interesting...so I want to know more about it!

[Like, sure, there's going to be rule-breaking involved in this, but also: this has literally never stopped 9S from doing anything, once his curiosity gets going...

And it's in full swing about now, for sure! 9S is even standing up from his bed, as if he's about read to head out through the door already--but that last question does manage to stop him in his tracks.]

--Huh? What... [??? 9S...slowly mirrors the gesture, visibly confused--but it clicks when he realizes where it's actually pointing, at which point he's shaking his head.] --I mean, yeah, of course I'll see them! My eyes work fine! That's, what you're wondering, isn't it...I get that a lot. Look, this is actually a visor! Even if it doesn't look like it.

[Because blindfold visors are definitely part of...foreigner aesthetic, evidently.....9S sighs after this, dropping his hand.]

...Unless maybe I should take it off? I'm not actually sure how much this would effect seeing spirits, exactly...not like I've ever seen any before anyway. Have you?

[Maybe that wasn't entirely a gagtag before. Maybe Masamune is a little butthurt that this guy with two working eyes to have the gall to go around covering them. Steal his thunder, huh? He had to sacrifice an entire eyeball to look this cool.

Hmmph... I guess you can leave it on. Maybe it'll work like with a camera, since people say you can pick up spirits on one of those really easy. [Or maybe 9S will see nothing at all, while Masamune gasps and points to where there is definitely a ghost for real and not just him fucking with him some more!! That's what he gets for wearing the stupid thing. Man, Masamune's a genius of petty revenge.]

Me, I don't need that. I'm already attuned. I've fought with demons and dark spirits and whatever plenty! [Or... Whatever the hell Oichi's deal is... He's not sure, but he HAS actually died for the vine once so that has to count for something.]

[Wow look it's not his fault it's entirely possible to wear cool eyepatches without having to sacrifice any eyeballs whatsoever!! YOU CAN'T JUST USE YOUR EYEBALL MISFORTUNES TO GATEKEEP RAD EYEWEAR SIR--

--But, being entirely oblivious to the actual source of Masamune's ire over there, the Aggressive Pouting being leveled in 9S's direction is just sort of confusing more than anything else. Can't pick up any hints from what's actually being said either, so...? Well, seems the best he can do is to smile and continue on. Which isn't too hard anyway, considering the exciting topic at hand...]

Yeah, I mean, I guess it technically is a sort of camera...spirits pick up really easily on those, you think so? Sounds like a good way for me to keep an eye out, then! [Ah, should he mention that even without a visor, his eyes could also very technically count as cameras in themselves too....? Well, in the end he doesn't, if only because it's not a distinction that actually occurs to 9S to point out.

Instead, very wholesomely assuming that they're prepping for a team adventure with no imminent petty revenge whatsoever:] You know, I never actually heard anything about being able to fight them...but in that case, we should definitely be able to take care of whatever ends up coming at us, huh? [Aah, neat, neat. Is it actually possible for 9S to be any more visibly excited about this prospect? Apparently the answer is yes, because he sure looks like it, beaming and gesturing towards the door.] You can take point, anyway! Since you've got more experience, and all that. Think it's late enough to check things out right now?

[It looks dark enough outside anyway, let's go!!! TIME TO DIE FOR THE VINE YET AGAIN....kizuna challenge--]

[He can gatekeep and bully cute and earnest boys all he likes! He won't even feel bad about it!! There is no way this could possibly backfire on him in any shape or form. Maybe if 9S' special eyes help him revive his streamer career Masamune can even forgive his non-crimes. Only maybe though.

Deferring to his superiority is a pretty good step, though. He takes a peek at his phone and makes a small 'huh' of surprise. Time sure flies when it makes a thread convenient.]

It is after curfew already... Okay! Let's go kick some ghost ass! [wait, when did that become the goal-] Just follow me!

[Here we go, proudly marching out the door.]

[Well first they'll have to see if he can even be hooked up to the local wifi before any streaming career dreams start taking off........but to be fair, it's probably true that you won't find a higher-quality camcorder than an actual android--!

Also clearly they both just finally reached their assigned room here kind of late in the day, being busy with Fun Hot Spring Things up to this point!! But who needs sleep when there's ghost hunting to be had?! --Well, 9S tends to sleep a lot less frequently than humans anyhow, and he's certainly way too alert to consider powering down right now...it's fine, this will totally be fine. Maybe it'll even be sort of fun? Just--messing around with a stranger-in-crime like this is really a pretty exhilarating idea! Opportunities like this would ever even be allowed to happen in the first place, back home...

Uh, not that they've even actually done anything just yet, though. Out of the doorway they march, and true to his word 9S waits for Masamune to take the lead, as tempting as it is to just eagerly start in a direction of his own volition already. Huh, when things are sort of dark like this, even this hallway here already has a different sort of atmosphere to it...]

Okay, so...where are we headed first? Is there a type of area spirits like to gather in more than others, or something? [Flex that occult expertise you've been bragging about, Masamune, tell him how this works...!]

[Fine, they can start with pre-recorded footage and then work their way up. As long as Masamune gets to live the dream of recklessly endangering himself AND getting attention for it. Buy dat Dragon Merch.

That's for later, though. Now is ghost hunting time! W...Why does Masamune keep letting himself start to get caught up in 9S' excitement when he knows this is all a dumb prank of his own design?! It's like trying to trick a puppy! You still get all into it! He mentally kicks himself in the ass and shoves his hands into his pockets while he goes, uh, left, he guesses.]

They're probably all over the place, but I guess they'd be most active wherever there was the most violence... The baths right where they died, then!
